We now have a new gardening team on the estate and first impressions have been very good. The service day is Tuesday and the dates for May are as follows 1st /15th and 29th, then every two weeks after that. The team have reported dog fouling in some of the communal gardens, so can dog owners please make sure all dog waste is removed before the gardeners arrive as grass will NOT be cut where dog fouling is found and it will be reported to Arena. It is a breach of your tenancy if you don’t keep your area clean and tidy. For some time now we have been campaigning for a landscaping revamp in the area and this project has now been agreed my Arena management. Westra has been asked to seek match funding for the work and we are now in the process of raising the money needed to get the project underway.

Queens Jubilee

Plans are being made with St Thomas’ church to help the community celebrate the Queens Jubilee in June. Towards the end of May residents will receive leaflets with details of the event. We hope you will come and join in the fun.

New Garden service for Older and Vulnerable Helena Tenants

Do you know someone who needs help with their garden? Helena Partnerships is offering a new garden service from spring 2012.
New customers who want to join the scheme must meet certain criteria to be eligible;
•Must be over 65 or over 55 if living in properties designated for Older Persons (sheltered)
• Or in receipt of a specified disability benefit
•And have a clear rent account.
Work will be carried out by gardeners from our Green Space Team. The charges will depend on the size of your garden. For example, if it would take 30 minutes to complete your garden each month, you would pay £4.97 each week. These charges are payable over 50 weeks to spread the cost for customers.
Customers can choose what garden work can be completed each month, but generally, the grass is mown once a month and hedges are cut twice each year. Gardeners will visit throughout the growing season from March to October.

Bogus Callers

Could you please all be aware of the below information and pass it on to
your other colleagues/residents:

During the past week we have received a small number of reports with
regards to males trying to gain access to properties so they can look at
the loft insulation.

On one occasion three white males called at an address in Thatto Heath
stating they work for a company called, ‘Nationwide’ and whom are currently
working on behalf of ‘Helena Housing’. The males stated that they were at
the property to inspect the loft insulation. The female occupant whom they
spoke to didnt allow them access to the property as she wanted to check
with Helena Housing if this was correct or not and told them to come back
in an hour. The female then contact Helena Housing to check if
‘Nationwide’ had been instructed to attend her property but Helena
confirmed they hadnt. The males returned to the address an hour later and
when the female refused them entry to her house she was subjected to verbal
abuse.

The female occupant described the males as all white and drove away in a
black ford fiesta.

Fives Football News

Due to reports of inappropriate behaviour at the last tournament, Westra have suspended the football. The matter will be discussed at the next Westra committee meeting and a decision made as to whether the committee will continue to fund this activity.

Centre Openings

As from Monday 16th April the centre will only be open on Mondays from 10am till 12pm Due to staff shortages.

WESTRA AGM

Westra would like to invite you to their AGM meeting to be held on
THURSDAY 22ND MARCH 11am at Raglan Court, Lyon Close.
Representatives from the housing agencies along with Councilors and the Police will be attending this meeting, which give’s you the opportunity to raise any questions you may have. Residents are also invited to apply for the positions of Chairperson, Secretary, and Treasurer. Invites have been delivered to homes across the estate, also attached are nomination forms for the above committee positions. Nomination forms are also available from Westra Centre. Please note all nominations need to be returned to Westra Centre by Monday 12th March

HELENA NEWS

Following residents requests for information about the fencing scheme, we have been told that the scheme has now started in the Union Street area. It is expected that work will start on Westfield estate in the next 3-4 weeks.

ESTATE INSPECTIONS

Inspections are conducted every other month with Helena & Arena housing officers, our Police CSO’s and Westra. We welcome any residents who would like to join us on these inspections, we leave Westra Centre at 1pm and the next inspection is scheduled for.
