Bubble Ban At Parties: Safety Myths Exposed

Wednesday, April 3rd, 2013

Bubbles banned from a child’s birthday party and toothpicks removed from a restaurant are among a list of health and safety myths exposed in the last year.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said more than 150 cases had been reported to a panel it set up last year to target “jobsworths” who use safety laws as a ruse to ban legitimate activities.
Officials said people were hiding behind health and safety to cover up bad customer service or because they were afraid of being sued.
Cases referred to the panel included bars refusing to serve pints in glasses with a handle, a hotel saying they could not serve burgers rare, toothpicks removed from a restaurant, shredded paper banned from a school fete, and a birthday party venue which refused to use a bubble machine.
Judith Hackitt, who chairs the HSE, said: “We never cease to be amazed by the cases we consider.
“Why on Earth do people think that they can get away with banning pint glasses with handles, bubbles at a birthday party, or burgers served anything other than well done, claiming they are a health and safety hazard?
“The reality is that people hide behind health and safety when there are other reasons for what they’re doing – fear of being sued perhaps, or bad customer service.
“It’s time for them to own up to their real motives.
“The sad fact is that while all this nonsense is being spouted, it overshadows what health and safety is really about – ensuring people return home without injury from their day’s work, every day.”
In another case, a couple were told that a hotel chambermaid could not make up a cot bed for their son because of health and safety regulations. “What” ????

A.G.M Chairs Report 2013

Wednesday, April 3rd, 2013

First can I thank everyone who braved the snow to attend the meeting.

The last year has been a particular challenge due to the cut backs in funding, but we seem to have come through unscathed. This is mainly due to the support both physically and financially from our partner agencies Helena, Arena and Riverside, and we would like to convey our sincere thanks for all they do for us. The financial support has meant that we could continue with the Kids Club activities, and although they missed out on trips last year, they still enjoyed an art and drama session last Easter which produced a huge mural that covers one wall in the centre, and during the Summer break we had go karting which took place over 2 days. This last activity proved really popular and we hope to repeat it this year, and they still enjoyed parties at both Halloween and Christmas.

Continuing on the funding front we have been successful in obtaining a grant that has enabled us to replace our office computers, and we have also installed one in the community room which will be available for residents to use. We feel this will be a benefit to many residents who don’t have access to a computer at home, as it seems that many forms now are only available on line to down load, it can also help with things such as job searches as well.

The Committee have decided that this year, instead of the annual coach trip we should have a Summer festival. A venue to where it could be held has proved a bit of a problem, but we have approached Peter Street Centre to see if they would be willing to let us use their facilities and we are waiting to hear back from them. We also raised this at the last meeting with our partner agencies and they are keen to be involved. As soon as we have a confirmed venue we will continue with the plans and we would welcome any suggestions or ideas from residents as well.

We had a particular problem last year with ASB in the Napier St area, but we have seen a significant reduction with the problems there lately, partly due to action by our Police team and also by people who where involved in the ASB moving out of the area. The problem we had with graffiti around the estate seems to have died away, we worked quickly with Helena and the Council to get it removed quickly as some was offensive.
The biggest challenge this year for all of us is probably the introduction of the “Bedroom Tax” despite residents being informed well in advance, it’s only recently that people realise that this is about to take place and they have started to do something about it. With not enough properties to meet demand this will also be a difficult time for our housing providers as well. In response to what lays ahead, a member of our committee, Lynn Turton, will be our Welfare reform adviser, and will be available to help any residents that need it. Lynn will be kept informed of any changes that might occur and have the back up of the Helena welfare reform team.
Finally it just remains for me to thank all the residents that support us, as well as our partner agencies, and we hope your support will continue as we face the year ahead. We would also appeal to any residents that feel they have any time to spare, to come and speak with us about getting involved. We are always grateful for any help at all, and it can be as little or as much as you wish to do, if it’s only dropping a few newsletters through letter boxes it would help us a lot.

Thank you.

Lynn Arnold.
Chair of Westra.

British Gas Energy Trust

Wednesday, December 19th, 2012

Most people are unaware of this trust, and we only found out about it through one of our residents who received help from it, and you don’t have to be a customer of British Gas to benefit from a grant

The Trust contributes to the relief of poverty, with a particular focus on fuel poverty and helping those who are struggling to pay for their consumption of gas and electricity.
The Trust provides a significant difference to the lives of those in need by awarding grants to clear energy and other household debts and for essential household items such as washing machines, fridge’s etc. If you are in need and think you can benefit from a grant you can get further information from the Citizen Advice Bureau situated at the Millennium Centre or call for an appointment on 01744 737866.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Wednesday, December 19th, 2012

Here is a brief update following some of our resident’s requests and enquiries.
Dog Bin for Eccleston Street
We did apply to the Council for this some time ago following a request from a few residents. Cllr Gill is looking into it on our behalf and we hope to have some news shortly.
Traffic calming Pigot Street
Following the install of the Play Area on Pigot Street, we approached St Helens Council to ask for traffic calming measures for the safety of the children who use the park. Negotiations are still taking place between Cllr Gill and Council officials and we hope to have some feed back shortly.

FUNDING NEWS

Wednesday, December 19th, 2012

Westra have applied for funding to provide a computer for residents to use. So many things are available on line these day’s, such as job searches and application forms for all manner of things. Not everyone can afford to own a computer, let alone the internet fees and other costs. We hope, if the application is successful to provide this service by early next year. Fingers crossed.

ADVICE FROM ST HELENS POLICE

Tuesday, December 11th, 2012

St Helens Police yesterday issued a warning to all drivers not to defrost
their cars by leaving the engines running and the cars unattended.

There have been a number of cars stolen this week in St Helens as a result
of people leaving their car engines switched on whilst defrosting them.

A car stolen in such circumstances is not covered by car insurance.

Be vigilant and be careful!!!

CENTRE OPENING TIMES

Tuesday, October 30th, 2012

Regrettably, due to the shortage of volunteers we have yet again had to reduce the opening times at the centre. We would also like to point out that the service that Westra provides is done so by residents from this estate. There is also a misconception that volunteers are paid for their time, this is not the case. All residents that are involved give their time freely. The new opening times are as follows.

MONDAY 10am till 12pm

TUESDAY 12pm till 2pm

WEDNESDAY CLOSED

THURSDAY 12pm till 2pm

FRIDAY 10am till 12pm
Westra are always happy to hear from anyone who may be interested in helping out. Whether it be delivering news letters or helping out at the centre, please contact us if you have some time to spare.

ESTATE INSPECTION

New Garden service for Older and Vulnerable Helena Tenants

Tuesday, May 8th, 2012

Do you know someone who needs help with their garden? Helena Partnerships is offering a new garden service from spring 2012.
New customers who want to join the scheme must meet certain criteria to be eligible;
•Must be over 65 or over 55 if living in properties designated for Older Persons (sheltered)
• Or in receipt of a specified disability benefit
•And have a clear rent account.
Work will be carried out by gardeners from our Green Space Team. The charges will depend on the size of your garden. For example, if it would take 30 minutes to complete your garden each month, you would pay £4.97 each week. These charges are payable over 50 weeks to spread the cost for customers.
Customers can choose what garden work can be completed each month, but generally, the grass is mown once a month and hedges are cut twice each year. Gardeners will visit throughout the growing season from March to October.
If you know someone who is interested in joining the scheme, please ask them to contact One call on 01744 637383. We will then arrange to visit to assess the size of their garden and provide them with a price.
