LEAD THEFTS

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

Once again the estate has been the victim of lead thefts.
The Housing Associations inform us that they are now
replacing lead with a substitute to deter further thefts.
Some private home owners have also been victims, and we would
suggest that you follow the Housing Associations lead and replace
it with a substitute. There could also be properties that have been targeted but have not yet been identified, if you are aware that there is lead on your property could you please check, and if you find any missing report it to the Police and your Housing Association, for private owners, report to the Police.

WESTRA 2010

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

Once again, this year has been a busy one for us. With fundraising raffles and rummage sales, the opening of the Community Garden the introduction of parking restrictions, graffiti & clean up days just to name a few. Although the Community garden is looking a bit sorry for it’s self at the moment, we are looking forward to Spring when we can start the planting program. The Kids Club which runs throughout School holidays is as popular as ever, and although we have lost a few members due to them moving out of the area, we still have 20 plus members registered with us. We also saw the introduction of the five a side football teams which has received good support. As well as the nice things mentioned we have also helped many residents with problems, from Housing related matters to ASB etc.
Looking forward to 2011, we realise that like many other organisations cut backs will be inevitable, especially in the voluntary sector due to government restraints, but we will endeavour to continue with the same level of service we provide for our community. Finally we thank you the residents and also our supporting agencies for your support over the last year, and we wish you all a very Merry Xmas & A Healthy & Prosperous New Year.

BE A GOOD NEIGHBOUR

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

Having already experienced very cold weather, and with the threat of worse to come, we urge you to be prepared. The elderly are at their most vulnerable at this time of year, so if you have elderly neighbours please keep a check on them.
Have a stock of salt or sand on hand and do your bit by keeping paths clear of ice and snow. Keep a stock of tinned food just in case you cant get to the shops and lastly keep warm, plenty of thin layers are better than one thick jumper. Don’t let bad weather catch you out.

HELP THE HOMELESS

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

This year we are once again asking for your help. The Hope centre who provide warm clothes and a hot meal for the homeless need any old woollens and tinned food that you can spare. Items such as jumpers (male, female) hats gloves, blankets will all be gratefully received. Tinned soup and vegetables are also needed. You can leave any donations at our centre in Lewis St, up to December 16th. Thank you in advance for your help.

POLICE CHIEF VISITS WESTRA

Friday, October 8th, 2010

Despite his very tight schedule, we were pleased that the Assistant Chief Constable of Merseyside Colin Matthews was able to drop by our centre last week. He was eager to learn more about the work we do in our community, and he was particularly impressed with the work we do with the Kids Club (which was formed thanks to Police funding) and he congratulated us on what we had achieved so far. He was disappointed that he was unable to spend more time with us, but he left with a promise to come and see us again as long as we promised to have the kettle on. We hope that he will come again, with more time to sit and talk further on Policing in communities.

HELENA LANDSCAPE PROJECT

Friday, October 8th, 2010

The Westfield estate has been chosen as one of four estates to be involved in a landscape project with Helena Partnerships. The project will involve Westra Kids Club and Helena residents. The first meeting took place last week with seven residents attending. This is an excellent chance for You the residents to have a say in what you would like to see on the Helena area of the estate, as further meetings are going to be planned we would love more residents to get involved. What would you like to see? Flowers? Shrubs? Or maybe you may have a better idea to make the area look better. Your views count so please get in touch for more information.

HOSTEL GETS THE GREEN LIGHT

Friday, October 8th, 2010

We were very disappointed to learn that this development on Boundary road has been approved. Cllr John Beirne along with Westra and local residents campaigned hard against this development and St Helens Councils Planning Committee after hearing our objections refused the planning application. The applicants however appealed to the Government Planning Inspectorate who are based in Bristol, and won the appeal. Cllr Beirne at a recent meeting thanked Westra and our residents for their support, and assured us that he will continue to monitor this situation. What really angers us is the fact that some faceless person at the other end of the country can decide what we should have on our door step, without even bothering to visit the area. When David Cameron came to power, he vigorously spoke of Community Empowerment, and local people having a say in their local communities, well we said loud and clear that we did not want this development, and what did it count for?
Absolutely Nothing.

Clean up day

Monday, August 9th, 2010

The estate clean up day, which took place on the 5th August proved a success with many
residents pleased with the results. Teams from Arena, Helena and the Council
all took part in the clean up, and the Children from the Kids Club also got involved,
doing a litter pick around the area. 6 skips where placed around the estate (supplied by WESTRA)
and most of them got filled very quickly. The ones placed around the Peter street area were the least used. The dog warden was based at the Westra Centre and he chipped 7 dogs in the two hours he was with us. The centre saw a busy stream of people throughout the day, with the free hotpot going down a treat. Thank you to everyone who took part
DOG OWNERS PLEASE NOTE: WE HAVE NOW RECEIVED FURTHER SUPPLIES OF DOG
BAGS WHICH YOU CAN COLLECT FREE OF CHARGE FROM THE CENTRE.
