Westfield Tenants and Residents Association

The Westfield estate has been chosen as one of four estates to be involved in a landscape project with Helena Partnerships. The project will involve Westra Kids Club and Helena residents. The first meeting took place last week with seven residents attending. This is an excellent chance for You the residents to have a say in what you would like to see on the Helena area of the estate, as further meetings are going to be planned we would love more residents to get involved. What would you like to see? Flowers? Shrubs? Or maybe you may have a better idea to make the area look better. Your views count so please get in touch for more information.

We were very disappointed to learn that this development on Boundary road has been approved. Cllr John Beirne along with Westra and local residents campaigned hard against this development and St Helens Councils Planning Committee after hearing our objections refused the planning application. The applicants however appealed to the Government Planning Inspectorate who are based in Bristol, and won the appeal. Cllr Beirne at a recent meeting thanked Westra and our residents for their support, and assured us that he will continue to monitor this situation. What really angers us is the fact that some faceless person at the other end of the country can decide what we should have on our door step, without even bothering to visit the area. When David Cameron came to power, he vigorously spoke of Community Empowerment, and local people having a say in their local communities, well we said loud and clear that we did not want this development, and what did it count for?
Absolutely Nothing.

The estate clean up day, which took place on the 5th August proved a success with many
residents pleased with the results. Teams from Arena, Helena and the Council
all took part in the clean up, and the Children from the Kids Club also got involved,
doing a litter pick around the area. 6 skips where placed around the estate (supplied by WESTRA)
and most of them got filled very quickly. The ones placed around the Peter street area were the least used. The dog warden was based at the Westra Centre and he chipped 7 dogs in the two hours he was with us. The centre saw a busy stream of people throughout the day, with the free hotpot going down a treat. Thank you to everyone who took part

Due to the use of the centre for Kids Club activities there will be NO Reflexology or Health day in August. This service will resume in September.

As clouds loomed overhead, thankfully the rain stayed away; as invited guests and residents arrived to see St Helens Mayor Neil Taylor and his Mayoress wife Ginny open the Community Garden on Lyon Close. Once the formalities were over the gate was opened to allow people in to view the garden, and Kids Club members got to work planting flowers in one of the raised beds. Thanks go to local resident Ted Cowhig for his generous donation, part of which was used to purchase a bench which will bear a plaque in recognition of his kindness. Special thanks also go to St Helens Chamber and Steve Anders and his team for all the hard work they put in to ensure we had the garden ready for the opening. Had it not been for them this project would never have got off the ground. Later everyone headed over to Raglan Court for a buffet lunch to finish off an enjoyable day.
